ANTIQUE JOHN HUGHES 1871 PATENT MODEL PROCESS FOR IMMATURE COTTON BOLLS MACHINE

Description

This auction is for the interesting old patent model as seen in the photos. The tag states that this is Patent # 115209 , granted to John Hughes on May 30th 1871, " Process for utilizing immature Cotton-BOLLS". The model is in as found condition. I can see that it is missing the top removable frame, drive belt ( there is a rubber band there currently) , and one of the bottom support boards that attach to the partition. If you reference the patent and compare to photos you will notice these items. Good news is that the working mechanical parts of the model are still present and free to rotate.
I did a little internet research on this and quickly came across information on John Hughes and how he had the first patent on a cotton stripper. If you google " History of Cotton Stripper" you can get to some of the links I was looking at. His Cotton Stripper/Picker was patent 113170, also from 1871. Within his Cotton Picker Patent he refers to another machine that can process unopen bolls which I believe the patent model in this auction is. " This machine strips from the plants the unopen as well as the open bolls or cups and loose cotton, which can afterward be separated by another machine for that purpose"
